Call to renewal and prayer of dedication

*Call to Worship

Jim Sanderlin, Director of Worship
from Psalm 45

Leader: My heart overflows with a pleasing theme;
    I address my verses to the king;
    my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.
People: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
All: We will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
    nations will praise you forever and ever.

*hymn of praise

Crown Him with Many Crowns
words: Matthew Bridges & Godfrey Thring
music: George Elvey

Crown Him with many crowns,
The Lamb upon His throne.
Hark! How the heav’nly anthem drowns
All music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing
Of Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless king
Through all eternity.

Crown Him the Lord of love,
Behold His hands and side,
Rich wounds, yet visible above,
In beauty glorified.
No angel in the sky
Can fully bear that sight,
But downward bends his wondering eye
At mysteries so bright.

Crown Him the Lord of life,
Who triumphed o’er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife
For those He came to save.
His glories now we sing,
Who died, and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring,
And lives that death may die.

Crown Him the Lord of Heav'n:
One with the Father known,
One with the Spirit through Him giv'n
From yonder glorious throne.
To Thee be endless praise,
For Thou for us hast died;
Be Thou, O Lord, through endless days
Adored and magnified.
Amen.

CONFESSION and Assurance

Corporate Prayer
Leader: Gracious Father, in Your great love, You sent Your Son, Jesus, to save us, to adopt us into Your family, and to use us as Your kingdom representatives in the world. We crown Him King;
People: But we confess that in our sin, we often haven’t responded to Your grace as we should have.
Leader: Rather than love You with all our heart, soul, and mind, we have loved ourselves.
People: Rather than love and serve our neighbors, in our self-centeredness, we have ignored the needs of others.
Leader: Rather than build Your kingdom, we have sought to build our own.
All: Give us Your enabling grace to repent of our disobedience and return us to the joy of our salvation in Christ, so that we may love and follow Him all the days of our lives, declaring His gospel to those around us, and making disciples from all nations.

Individual Prayer

Assurance of Pardon Ephesians 1:7,8; 2:8,9
In him [Jesus Christ] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us...For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
 — Ephesians 1:7-8; 2:8-9

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Affirmation of FaitH

The Nicene Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth;
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of his Father before all worlds:
God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,
begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made:
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven,
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary,
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried;
and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures,
and ascended into heaven,
and sits on the right hand of the Father.
And he shall come again with glory
to judge both the living and the dead
whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
The Lord, and Giver of Life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
together is worshiped and glorified;
who spoke by the prophets.

And we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
And we look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

*Doxology

words: Thomas Ken
music: from Genevan Psalter

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Hymns of Mission

I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord
words: Timothy Dwight
music: Aaron Williams

I love Thy kingdom, Lord,
The house of Thine abode,
The church our blessed Redeemer saved
With His own precious blood.

I love Thy church, O God.
Her walls before Thee stand,
Dear as the apple of Thine eye,
And written on Thy hand.

For her my tears shall fall
For her my prayers ascend,
To her my cares and toils be given
Till toils and cares shall end.

Beyond my highest joy
I prize her heavenly ways,
Her sweet communion, solemn vows,
Her hymns of love and praise.

Sure as Thy truth shall last,
To Zion shall be giv'n
The brightest glories earth can yield
And brighter bliss of Heaven.

O Church, Arise
by Keith Getty & Stuart Townend
©2005 Thankyou Music

O church, arise, and put your armor on;
Hear the call of Christ our Captain.
For now the weak can say that they are strong
In the strength that God has given.
With shield of faith and belt of truth,
We’ll stand against the devil’s lies.
An army bold, whose battle cry is Love,
Reaching out to those in darkness.

Our call to war, to love the captive soul,
But to rage against the captor;
And with the sword that makes the wounded whole,
We will fight with faith and valor.
When faced with trials on every side,
We know the outcome is secure.
And Christ will have the prize for which He died:
An inheritance of nations.

Come, see the cross, where love and mercy meet,
As the Son of God is stricken;
Then see His foes lie crushed beneath His feet,
For the Conqueror has risen!
And as the stone is rolled away,
And Christ emerges from the grave,
This victory march continues till the day
Ev’ry eye and heart shall see Him.

So Spirit, come, put strength in every stride;
Give grace for every hurdle.
That we may run with faith to win the prize
Of a servant good and faithful.
As saints of old, still line the way,
Retelling triumphs of His grace,
We hear their calls, and hunger for the day
When with Christ we stand in Glory.

*OLD Testament Reading

Joel 2:28-32    Sherie Dobereiner
The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward,
    that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
    your old men shall dream dreams,
    and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female servants
    in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

Congregational Prayer and the lord’s prayer

Greg Lehmann

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Sermon

This month’s theme is Moving Forward: Writing the Next Chapter.

A Powerful Witness to Our World
*Acts 1:1-11; 2:1,2
Dr. Steve Miller, Intentional Interim Pastor

The Promise of the Holy Spirit
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The Ascension
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The Coming of the Holy Spirit
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

*hymn of response

O Zion, Haste
words: Mary Ann Thomson
music: James Walch

O Zion, haste, thy mission high fulfilling,
To tell to all the world that God is light,
That He who made all nations is not willing
One soul should perish, lost in shades of night.
Publish glad tidings, tidings of peace;
Tidings of Jesus, redemption and release.

Behold how many thousands still are lying
Bound in the darksome prison house of sin,
With none to tell them of the Savior’s dying,
Or of the life He died for them to win.
Publish glad tidings, tidings of peace;
Tidings of Jesus, redemption and release.

Proclaim to every people, tongue, and nation
That God, in whom they live and move, is love;
Tell how He stooped to save His lost creation,
And died on earth that we might live above.
Publish glad tidings, tidings of peace;
Tidings of Jesus, redemption and release.

*Benediction
