Call to Worship

Exodus 15:11

Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?
  Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
  awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?

hymns of praise

Our God
by Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves, Jonas Myrin, and Matt Redman
©2010 Atlas Mountain Songs

Water You turned into wine,
opened the eyes of the blind.
There's no one like You, none like You!

Into the darkness You shine,
out of the ashes we rise.
There's no one like You, none like You!

Our God is greater, our God is stronger.
God, You are higher than any other.
Our God is Healer, awesome in power,
Our God! Our God!

Into the darkness You shine,
out of the ashes we rise
there's no one like You, none like You!

Our God is greater, our God is stronger.
God, You are higher than any other.
Our God is Healer, awesome in power,
Our God! Our God!

And if our God is for us,
then who could ever stop us?
And if our God is with us,
then what could stand against?

Our God is greater, our God is stronger.
God, You are higher than any other.
Our God is Healer, awesome in power,
Our God! Our God!

Your Name
by Glenn Packiam and Paul Baloche
©2006 Integrity Worship

As morning dawns and evening fades,
You inspire songs of praise
That rise from earth to touch Your heart
And glorify Your Name.

Your Name is a strong and mighty tower;
Your Name is a shelter like no other;
Your Name, let the nations sing it louder
'Cause nothing has the power to save
But Your Name.

Jesus, in Your Name we pray,
Come and fill our hearts today;
Lord, give us strength to live for You
And glorify Your Name.

CONFESSION and assurance

Corporate Confession

Heavenly Father, there is truly no one like You, yet we confess that we often forget Who You are. You, Lord, are the great God Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Yet, at times, we live in fear. Our circumstances overwhelm us and we collapse under the weight of anxiety, fear, and doubt. For these transgressions we ask Your forgiveness. We also ask for Your strength. Remind us to be who You would have us to be regardless of our situation. Give us eyes to see You as You really are so we might be bold witnesses in our world. We pray this in the name of Jesus.

Individual Confession

Assurance of Pardon Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom shall I be afraid?

Hymn of Assurance

The Lord is My Salvation
by Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty, Jonas Myrin and Nathan Nockles

The grace of God has reached for me,
And pulled me from the raging sea.
And I am safe on this solid ground:
The Lord is my salvation.

I will not fear when darkness falls,
His strength will help me scale these walls.
I’ll see the dawn of the rising sun:
The Lord is my salvation.

Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save, faithful in love.
My debt is paid and the vict’ry won:
The Lord is my salvation.

My hope is hidden in the Lord,
He flow’rs each promise of His Word.
When winter fades I know spring will come:
The Lord is my salvation.

In times of waiting, times of need,
When I know loss, when I am weak,
I know His grace will renew these days:
The Lord is my salvation,

Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save, faithful in love.
My debt is paid and the vict’ry won:
The Lord is my salvation.

And when I reach my final day
He will not leave me in the grave,
But I will rise,
He will call me home:
The Lord is my salvation.

Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save, faithful in love.
My debt is paid and the vict’ry won:
The Lord is my salvation.

Glory be to God the Father.
Glory be to God the Son.
Glory be to God the Spirit:
The Lord is our salvation!

Sermon

Control the Tongue
Dr. Steve Miller, Intentional Interim Pastor

James 1:19-21, 26 19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

James 3:1–12 1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

Ephesians 4:29–30 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God
by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend
©2006 Thankyou Music

Holy Spirit, living Breath of God,
Breathe new life into my willing soul.
Bring the presence of the risen Lord
To renew my heart and make me whole.
Cause Your Word to come alive in me;
Give me faith for what I cannot see;
Give me passion for Your purity.
Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me.

Holy Spirit, come abide within;
May Your joy be seen in all I do-
Love enough to cover ev’ry sin
In each thought and deed and attitude.
Kindness to the greatest and the least,
Gentleness that sows the path of peace.
Turn my striving into works of grace.
Breath of God, show Christ in all I do.

Holy Spirit, from creation’s birth,
Giving life to all that God has made,
Show Your power once again on earth;
Cause Your church to hunger for Your ways.
Let the fragrance of our prayers arise.
Lead us on the road of sacrifice
That in unity the face of Christ
Will be clear for all the world to see.

Benediction
